The God Who Sees You
I hope you have had a wonderful March and that spring is in full bloom all around you! My almost two year old Ezra is so much more aware of everything this spring. He loves the flowers, the birds, and the bunnies that we have in our backyard every day. His language seems to be in full bloom as well. Every day he is saying something new and blowing us away.
I keep trying to get him to say “I love you” back to me but he hasn’t mastered that one just yet. Last week when I said, “I love you” to him he smiled his big grin back at me and said, “See you!” It melted my heart in the way that only a baby can warm his mothers heart. “See you.” felt even better than I love you to me because it reminded me immediately of Hagar’s story and my favorite name of God, the God who sees me.
In Genesis 16 we see Sarai and Abram becoming desperate to have a child after decades of infertility. Sarai decides to give her Egyptian maidservant Hagar to her husband Abram to bear a child on her behalf. After Sarai’s plan works and Hagar becomes pregnant, Hagar starts to despise Sarai. Sarai is unhappy and lashes out at Hagar and treats her harshly.
Hagar runs away from Sarai and the angel of the Lord finds her near a spring in the desert. The mental image of the angel of the Lord searching for me and comforting me after I have run away is the sweetest thing I can imagine. And even though he told Hagar to go back to Sarai and submit to her, he did promise her that her descendants would be too numerous to count.
Genesis 16:13 (NIV) She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her. “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
We serve a god who sees us. Our God leaves the ninety-nine sheep to find the one lost sheep. Even when we run away like the prodigal son he runs to meet us when we are a long way off. Our God created us. He sees us. He knows every hair on our heads.
Our God is a personal god that cares about our concerns both big and small. He provides for all of our needs.
He loves you and sees you in whatever season of life you are in. He sees you.
